ASSELSTINE’S TAKE  WIN AND BIG FISH PRIZE TOO!!

The opening tournament of the Quinte Fishing Series 2007 season took place at Centennial Park in Deseronto on Sunday, May 27th with 44 teams competing in the first of six (6) tournaments and the years only walleye event.   Anglers were greeted with cloudy, overcast skies and light rain at the morning check-in and at the 7:00 a.m. blastoff and this weather stayed around for most of the day.  Anglers fished from 7:00 a.m. with the afternoon check-in time at 4:00 p.m. and teams were allowed to bring in there best four walleye.

The Asselstine’s, Andy from Napanee and Darcy from Camden East, were one of the first teams to weigh in with a great weight of 20.30 lbs. and in that a good walleye weighing in at 9.10 lbs.  A number of teams made a gallant effort to strip them of the top spot but after the final team had weighed in, the Asselstine’s were still at the top of the list and claimed the opening win of the Quinte Fishing Series season.   For their win they received a cheque for $2,100.00 plus a $50.00 gift certificate from Kelsey’s, Belleville, fleece coats compliments of Mark’s Work Warehouse and tournament champion hats.  Their “big fish” also stood up as the largest walleye weighed in which also gave them the H2Optix - Bass Magnet Lures “Big Fish” Award of $880.00 cash, a pair of H2Optix sunglasses, $100.00 of custom soft plastic baits and Big Fish trophy.  Andy stated on stage, ““we had a good prefish this week using planer boards and crank baits and it still worked today for us”.  “We want to also thank Mortgage Intelligence of Belleville for the trip vouchers that we won at last years Classic - we had a great trip and will certainly have to do some more traveling as we had never been on a plane before this”!

Second place went to Frankford’s Nick Monger and Marc Potvin from Belleville with a weight of 17.00 lbs. and these anglers took home $1,500.00.  These anglers had a good day catching a number of fish but just couldn’t get that one “big fish” to put them over the top.

Napanee’s Grant Elliott and Karl Nuemayer took the third place money of $1,000.00 for their weight of 16.95 lbs

The Lawrence brothers, Tom and Steve, claimed fourth place with a weight of 15.70 lbs. giving them $550.00.
Long time Quinte anglers, Terry Langstaff and Brian Hadley placed fifth weighing in 15.55 lbs

Carrying Place anglers, Mike Lukashal and Cory Kinmond taking the sixth spot with a weight of 15.10 lbs.   These anglers earned $325.00 and $150.00 respectively for their day on the water.  Lukashal and Kinmond also took home an additional $150.00 as the top team in the “115 h.p and Under division” and also received a pair of Downriggers compliments of Humminbird.

The “House Team” of Mortgage Intelligence in Belleville have once again stepped up in 2007 with another great prize that is open to all anglers.  At each Q.F.S. tournament, every team that weighs in will be entered in a draw for a $300.00 prepaid Canadian Tire Gas Card.  Representative Peter House was on hand to draw the first winners for the season and stated, “ we wanted to give a prize that was open to all anglers, not just the winners, and we are happy to support the Series and make this happen in 2007".  With that, Peter pulled a token out of the container with the team number ten(10) on it and thus making brothers, Jeff and Mike MacDonald, the first winners of this great prize.

Tournament Director Pete Thompson was very happy with the number of entries for this first event of 2007 as it was one of the largest fields ever recorded for a Q.F.S. walleye tournament.   “Entries for the first bass tournament of 2007, June 23/24th, are already over 50 teams, an enthusiastic Thompson stated, and we could reach an all time high!  I encourage teams that wish to fish this event to get their entries in now as we will only take a maximum of 75 teams”.   Thompson also reminded anglers, “ tournament waters will be off limits to anglers from Saturday June 16th to Friday, June 22nd inclusive but if anglers need to be on the water for work related reasons or other requirements, please call or send a written request before you are on the water”.

The Series would also like to thank all our loyal and supportive sponsors and would welcome eight new sponsors who have joined our team: Northland Plumbing and Heating, The Boathouse Seafood Restaurant, Benton Fry Ford Sales, Lasher Masonry, Rawdon Refrigeration, McInroy-Maines Construction Ltd., Northtrail Trailers and Redwing Tackle.

Please remember that entries must be postmarked at least one week prior to the tournament date and further information can be obtained from Pete Thompson at 613-967-1024 (evenings).
