Glenora Fisheries Station (jump to reports) The staff at the Glenora Fisheries Station welcome you to our Open House. The Glenora Fisheries Station is operated by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), and is the main work center for Lake Ontario fisheries related activities. With the re-establishment of an Open House at the Glenora Fisheries Station, we wish to acknowledge the contributions of the late Jack Christie. Mr. Christie led fisheries research activities at the Station from 1957 to his retirement in 1990, and annual open houses had been a familiar part of his era. History Located to the east of Picton, the station is housed in a historic stone building on the Bay of Quinte waterfront next to the Glenora Ferry. The building was constructed in 1872 as an iron foundry to produce water turbines, and was converted to munitions manufacture during the First World War. Following the war, the property was purchased by the Ontario Government in 1922 for use as a fish hatchery. The hatchery produced lake whitefish and lake trout fry and fingerlings. Fish hatchery operations were discontinued in 1954, and the facility was dedicated to Lake Ontario fisheries research in 1957. The Station was reopened in 1989 after staff had been relocated in 1986 to allow for extensive renovations to modernize the building. On-going studies conducted at the Glenora Fisheries Station have allowed us to accumulate an archive of fisheries information dating back some 40 years. These long-term fish community data are unparalleled in freshwater fisheries science. Today Today, staff at the Glenora Fisheries Station continue to conduct a variety of fisheries studies on Lake Ontario and the Bay of Quinte. The Station houses staff from two groups. The Lake Ontario Management Unit is responsible for monitoring and managing Lake Ontario fish and fisheries. Research staff conduct scientific studies to address fisheries questions of both local and provincial significance. Among the Station =s top priorities are to assess year-to-year changes in fish populations, and to monitor the use of fish by recreational anglers and the commercial fish industry.
