Picton Bay (Bay of Quinte) November/99 Angling Survey Update

The Lake Ontario Management Unit recently completed an angling survey of Picton Bay, Bay of Quinte, shore and boat anglers. This late fall walleye angling fishery has become popular in recent years, and had not previously been surveyed.

It is estimated that shore and boat anglers caught 1,010 walleye of which 572 were harvested during the last three weeks of November and first week of December. Nearly 6,000 hours of fishing effort occurred during this time. Over 80% of the participants in this fishery originated from outside the Quinte area. Boat anglers caught the vast majority of the walleye.

Field crews measured 124 walleye weighing up to 12 lb. The average size of fish harvested was 590 mm in fork length (24-½ inches total length) and weighed 2.5 kg (5-½ lb).

The Lake Ontario Management Unit’s annual Bay of Quinte ice angling survey will begin January 2, 2000.
