$24,000 FINE FOR BAY OF QUINTE WALLEYE HARVESTED BY COMMERCIAL FISHER

On November 16, 1998, a Brighton man was fined $24,000 after pleading guilty in Ontario Court (Provincial Division) in Belleville to a charge of unlawfully possessing walleye. On April 19, 1998, Peter Quick, 25, was found to be in possession of 1,371 pounds of walleye, or pickerel. Quick, a licenced commercial fisherman, pleaded guilty to harvesting the fish from the Bay of Quinte. Commercial fishing for walleye is not permitted in the Bay of Quinte at any time. Quick was charged under the Federal Fisheries Act. The charge resulted from an investigation conducted by Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) Conservation Officers Ben Kelly, Bruce Chenier, Kevin Elliot and Doug Beach. MNR enforces the Federal Fisheries Act. "Every effort is being made to protect the resources of the Bay of Quinte, and abuses will not be tolerated," said Ron Harvey, Enforcement Supervisor for the Lake Ontario Management Unit of MNR.
