Opening Weekend Results

The weather, fish and anglers all turned up tp help make this years annual opening weekend tournaments a great success.  Despite the negative publicity with the attempted closure of the fishery both the Trenton Kiwanis and the Napanee Rod and Gun Club reported ticket sales as stable.

A Fish Story

Scott Kirkhom, winner of this years NRGC tournament, had quite a story to tell.  He was fishing in Hay Bay at night when he hooked into a big walleye.  Infact he was sure it would net him a prize.  Quickly he headed off to Pickerel Park where a weigh-in station was located.  The fish weighed just under 11lbs.  Satisfied with his start he called it a night and hit the sack.
The next morning he was contacted by an official of the Trenton Kiwanis who informed him that he had weighed his fish with the wrong tournament.  His ticket was for the NRGC and the weigh-in site at Pickerel Park was for the Trenton Kiwanis.  Not one to give up, he drove to the NRGC headquarters and asked them to enter his catch.  Unfortunately they could not accept the entry as the fish had already been released without being inspected by a NRGC judge.
All was not lost.  Scott went back out saturday night to the same spot on shore where had been casting the night before and proceeded to catch another hog.  This time he took it to the right weigh-in station.  The fish weighed 11.48 which put him in first place but he would have to wait until 4pm Sunday to see if it would be beat.  Lucky for him it was not.
He caught the fish on a floating # 10 rapala black and silver.

The winner of the Trenton Kiwanis also caught his fish at night.  Rob Ribey was fishing in Brighton Bay.  He had been out most of the day and now into the night without much luck.  He tried everything in his box.  First trolling, then casting, then back to trolling.  Finally getting tired he decided to tie on a pink jig tipped with a minnow and just let the wind push his boat while he dragged the bottom with his jig.  It was a good choice as a 12.20 lb. walleye picked it up just as he was drifting over the deep hole out front of the lighthouse.

Congratulations to both Scott Kirkhom and Rob Ribey and all of the other winners.
