Record Field and Big Weights Mark Opening Q.F.S. Bass Tournament

The opening bass tournament of the Quinte Fishing Series 10th anniversary season saw a record 61 teams arrive at George St. in Belleville competing for over $9,000.00 in cash and prizes. "It's great to see this many boats and teams to start our bass tournament season especially with teams coming from greater distances, Quebec, Toronto area, Kingston, stated tournament director, Pete Thompson. With this number of boats, the field was divided into two flights with boats 1 to 30 leaving George St. at 7:00 a.m. with the rest of the field blasting off at 7:15. Check in times were also divided into two flights, 4:00 and 4:15 p.m., to ease congestion at the docks and the weigh in process.
A large number of teams weighed in 5 fish limits in the 16 lb. range until Chris Sherman and Mat Seeley took the early lead with a weight of 19.90 lbs. This weight stood up for quite some time until Napanee's Dean Thompson and Mike Burriss came to the scales and weighed in an amazing weight of 23.25 lbs. to claim the win. These past Quinte Fishing Series "Team of the Year" winners are veteran anglers and had a great smallmouth bag and for their win took home $2,700.00 in cash as well as two fleece coats compliments of Mark's Work Warehouse, a $50.00 gift certificate from Kelsey's/Montana's, Belleville and tournament champion hats and medallions. On stage Mike stated, " we were very patient today and if we saw a large bass we worked slowly until we managed to hook it. We also have changed to Power Pro line and we didn't loose or break off one fish today - which is a nice change for us". In this great weight was also the big fish of the day, a smallmouth of 5.35 lbs. which gave these two anglers the Bass Magnet Lures Big Fish Award. They received $1,200.00 in cash from the lunker pool as well as $150.00 of quality plastic baits from Bass Magnet Lures.
Coming in second for the second year running were the Papiest brothers, Ralph and Tom, from Toronto and Richmond Hill, with a weight of 22.55 lbs. and these "big water" anglers claimed $1,900.00 for their efforts. Stirling's Tom Lawrence and brother Steve from Bancroft took the third place money of $1,200.00 and Tom said they had to "size their baits down" to get the bigger fish to bite.
Belleville's Bill Tripp and Frank Mondeville, with a weight of 20.25 lbs., took the $750.00 for their fourth place finish while early leaders, Sherman and Seeley dropped to fifth spot and received $500.00 for their day on the water. John McGoey and Jeff Pamet from the Peterborough area claimed $325.00 for their sixth place finish with 18.85 lbs. with Stirlings Art MacConnell and Blair Smith weighing in 17.65 lbs. and receiving $275.00. The final spot ended in a tie with Randy Cronkwright and Phil DeFosse, from Napanee and Cloyne, and Brockville's Michael Joron and Ken Bugden, weighing in 17.25 lbs. and these teams each received $75.00.
MacConnell and Smith also won the Belleville Sport and Lawn 115 HP and Under Award given to the top team using an engine that is 115 HP or less and received and additional $150.00 compliments of Belleville Sport and Lawn plus two rolls of Power Pro line and hats from a new sponsor, Red Wing Tackle of Ajax. Our thanks to Brian and Barry for this sponsorship.
"The first two day tournament of the 2006 season will be our next event on July 16/17th again in Belleville and we hope to see a large field once again", said Thompson.
"July will be a very busy month for Series organizers, as we will again be assisting with the Tips from the Tackle Box, Pro-Am style tournament on July 8/9th as well as the Stratos Owners Regional Qualifier on July 22/23rd, both of these events in Belleville also." Anglers are reminded that entries must be postmarked one (!) week prior to Quinte Fishing Series events and further info can be obtained from Pete Thompson at 613-921-9271(cell) or email at pthompsontourdir@hotmail.com.
