Sherman/Henderson and Asselstine's fight it out in Quinte Classic!
The final tournament of the 2005 Quinte Fishing Series, the Quinte Classic, got underway at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 17th from the George Street ramps in Belleville. Thirty seven teams fished the two day event fishing for a five (5) fish limit each day of large or smallmouth bass and cash and prizes of over $15,000.00 dollars.
Going into the weekend and final tournament, four teams had a realistic chance at the Quinte Fishing Series "Team of the Year" title and two of these teams made it clear they were going to do their best to claim that title after day one. The leaders in this race, Chris Sherman and Dave Henderson made an early charge with 20.30 lbs. and led until the last team of the day weighed in, Napanee's Andy and Darcy Asselstine with 20.89 lbs. to take the day one lead and in that bag was Big Fish of the day, a largemouth that topped the scales at 6.26 lbs.! Third after the first day of competition were Belleville's Mike Nabulsi and Jeff Kerr with 17.72 lbs.
Warm temperatures and near flat waters greeted the anglers day two as they headed out into the Bay with check in time at 3:00 p.m. A number of the top ten teams could not repeat their day one weights which resulted in some teams moving up the leader board.
With another great weight of 18.52 lbs., the Asselstines stayed atop the leader board and claimed the Quinte Classic crown with a total weight of 39.41 lbs. These two past champions took home $2,700.00 for the win as well as a $50.00 gift certificate compliments of Kelsey's/Montana's, Belleville and two embroidered fleece coats from Mark's Work Warehouse. On stage Andy stated,"we had a great prefish and had found some very aggressive fish. Day one we were in sight of the bridge all day long - we really didn't travel too far all weekend." Moving up from sixth place after day one to take the second spot overall were Frankford's Brian Hadley and Belleville's Terry Langstaff with a total weight of 34.93 lbs. and they received $1,800.00. Holding in third place for the weekend were Mike Nabulsi and Jeff Kerr with 33.38 lbs. and they claimed $1,000.00 for their two days on the water.
Dropping two positions from day one and taking fourth place were Corbyville's Chris Sherman and Dave Henderson with 13.07 lbs. for day two and a total weight of 33.37 lbs. These long time friends and fine anglers took $800.00 for their fourth place finish. Carrying Place's Mike Lukashal and Cory Kinmond of Brighton took home $440.00 for their fifth place finish with a total weight of 33.25 lbs. and the final money spot went to Belleville's Rob Mitchell and Michael Joron from Brockville with 32.68 lbs. and they received $220.00.
Tweed's Ron Ellery and partner John O'Brien took the Minnow Shack/Q.F.S. 115 H.P. and Under Award for teams using a motor that is 115 hp or under and claimed the $220.00 for the win along with $50.00 worth of quality plastic baits compliments of Bass Magnet Lures. For being the top placed team in this category at the Classic, they also received a three day vacation package compliments of Kevin Lavers of Merland Park Resort in Picton.
The Asselstine's with their largemouth from Saturday also took home the H2Optix by Bolle` Big Fish Award of $720.00 in cash along with two pairs of quality H2Optix sunglasses and trophy. Sunday's Big Fish winners were Belleville's Peter McInroy and Brian Tipping with another great largemouth weighing 6.02 lbs. and they also took home $720.00 in cash.
With their fourth place finish, Sherman and Henderson capped an amazing 2005 season to claim the Quinte Fishing Series "Team of the Year". In the five tournaments they counted to win the title, these talented anglers had three first place finishes, one third and a fourth for a total of 10 points, the lowest total in the nine year history of the Series - a truly phenomenal year!! Chris and Dave for this win received a Princecraft 15' Yukon boat, 15 HP Mercury outboard and trailer worth over $6,000.00. They also by winning this award, qualify for the Canadian Fishing Tour's 2006 One Day Series Classic and a prize package of over $40,000.00! By winning the Quinte Classic, the Asselstine's nipped second place finishers Hadley and Langstaff by only one point for the Runner Up award which gives them free entries for the 2006 season.
A number of other awards and prizes were handed out by tournament director Pete Thompson and Rick Somerville, weigh master, including the 8th Annual Frazee Award for sportsmanship and enthusiasm and this years winners were Steve Nix and Josh Green, new anglers to the Series. Thompson and Somerville also thanked Linda Mondeville for her help with the Live Release boat as well as Brian Hadley from Belleville Sport and Lawn for the many hours and support he gives the Series and local anglers. A number of draw prizes were handed out and we thank Merland Park, Quinte Alternator, Magnus Nets and Mitten Vinyl Siding for their donations.
Pete also thanked the staff, Rick, Jason, Ryan, his wife Margo and son Graeme for their help and commitment to the Series and the loyal Quinte Fishing Series sponsors, many who have been with the Series for all nine years, who keep this growing Series going with their sponsorship dollars and products. Dates for the 2006 tournament season will be available in the next few weeks and the Series is looking forward to another successful, exciting year.
