RECORD
FIELD and HUGE WEIGHTS AT QUINTE FISHING SERIES, “QUINTE CLASSIC”
The
2007 tournament season came to a close for the Quinte Fishing Series with
the Quinte Classic, on September 15 and 16th in Belleville. A
record 67 teams fished this final two day event of the year with over
22,000.00 in cash and prizes up for grabs.
Cooler temperatures and light wind met the anglers at the 7:00 and 7:20 a.m.
blast off times which was good for the four or five teams that had planned
to make the long run to big water and although long runs to Lake Ontario
take time off your fishing day, this time of year the results can be
rewarding and this was the case in day one. With a huge smallmouth bag of
24.50 lbs., Bob Izumi and Derek Strub took top spot for day one and in that
bag, the “big fish” of day one of 6.15 lbs. “This was the largest one day
weight ever recorded in our 11 years of tournaments, stated tournament
director Pete Thompson, and I had a feeling that we might see it from Bob
and
Derek
or Jeff and David this weekend sometime!”. Belleville’s Curtis Richardson
and partner Wayne Misselbrook were second with 21.90 lbs. and rounding out
the top three after day one were Jeff Toppings and David Chong with 21.10
lbs and these two anglers also ran to big water.
Day
two weather was much the same as day one with calm waters so teams could
again make the run if they so desired but big bags of largemouth could also
be the key as it was last tournament when over 22 plus pounds were weighed
in to take the win. A number of teams made charges up the leader board day
two but with another great weight of 21.70 lbs., Burlington’s Bob Izumi and
Derek Strub from Elora out weighed the field by over six lbs. with a total
of 46.20 lbs. to take the Quinte Classic title. For this win these two busy
anglers took home $4,100.00, fleece coats compliments of Mark’s Work
Warehouse, a $50.00 gift certificate from Kelsey’s/Montana’s, Belleville and
tournament champion hats and medallions. With another smallmouth of 5.20
lbs. on day two to go along with their big fish on day one, Bob and Derek
also claimed the “H2Optix by Bushnell/Bass Magnet Lures Big Fish prize which
gave them $1,320.00 for each day, Big Fish plaque, a pair of H2Optix
sunglasses and $100.00 of custom soft plastic baits. On stage Bob stated,”
Derek and I don’t fish together as a team very often, usually we’re fishing
against each other, but we knew we were going to burn some gas this weekend
but we were also confident we could get a big weight”. “We used a minnow
bait from Berkley Gulp a lot this weekend and found some good quality fish
each day”.
Second place went to David Chong from Richmond Hill and Picton’s Jeff
Toppings with a two day total weight of 40.05 lbs. giving these anglers
$3,200.00. “We spent most of the weekend not far from Bob and Derek”, said
Toppings, and we congratulate these two fine anglers”. Third place went to
Curtis Richardson and Wayne Misselbrook weighing in 16.20 lbs. day two for a
total of 38.10 lbs. and they received $1,900.00. Belleville’s Jeff Kerr and
Codie Lonsberry, fishing less than a kilometer from the weigh in site almost
all weekend took fourth place weighing in 37.20 lbs. and these anglers took
home $1,000.00.
Weighing in 34.60 lbs., Rob Paterson from Baltimore and Bowmanville’s Mark
Bruce received $700.00 for their fifth place position, taking home $500.00
for their sixth place spot were Neil Farlow from Frankford and Matt Peloquin
of Castleton who weighed in 34.40 lbs., and in seventh spot with 33.75 lbs.,
were Napanee’s Grant Elliott and Karl Neumayer and they took home $400.00.
The final two positions went to local anglers, Brian Hadley and Terry
Langstaff in eight place with 33.60 lbs. and in ninth spot with 33.55 lbs.
were Matt Seeley and Chris Sherman and these anglers received $320.00 and
$220.00 respectively.
An
error was made for the top team in the 115 H.P. and Under division during
the presentations and the winners were Trenton’s Jeff Adair and Rick
Marshall from Picton and they received $220.00 plus power pro fishing line
and top team medallions. Tournament Director Pete Thompson apologizes to
both teams involved for this error and congratulates them on a good
tournament and year.
The
Mortgage Intelligence $300.00 Pre Paid Canadian Tire Gas Card draw was won
by Randy Cronkwright and Phil DeFosse and our thanks to Peter House and the
“House Team” at Mortgage Intelligence for this great draw prize at all six
tournaments this season.
Following the tournament prize presentations, a number of draw prizes were
drawn and we thank Quinte Alternator and Starter, Merland Park Resort and
Minn Kota for their prize donations
of deep
cycle batteries, vacations packages and trolling motors and sonar units.
Prizes for the Series for the year were the next items of business as
“Angler/Team of the Year”, Runner Up prize and Top Team - 115 H.P. and Under
Division were all up for grabs going into the weekend. Two teams, Michael
Brown/Frank Doherty and Michael Joron were only separate by 10 points going
into this last tournament in the 115 h.p. and under division and with
Brown/Doherty finishing 29th and Joron finishing 18th,
Michael Joron claimed the title by finishing one (1) point ahead - 103 to
104!! Michael, who lives in Gananoque, received a five day vacation package
from Merland Park Resort and keeper trophy for a great year and Michael
thanked the Series for adding this division to the Series and encouraging
the smaller boats.
The
“Angler/Team of the Year” race going into this final tournament was down to
four teams with the Asselstine’s, Andy and Darcy, leadiing the way with 25
points, followed by Art MacConnell with 32 and Dan Elliot and Richard
Campbell/Jason Sexsmith with 47 points. When it was all over, the Runner Up
spot went to Campbell and Sexsmith with 59 points and they received free
entries for the 2008 season with the Asselstine’s holding onto the lead and
finishing with 45 points. Andy and Darcy who live in the Napanee area,
received a 15' Ultracraft boat, 15 H.P. Mercury Four Stroke Motor and
Northtrail Trailer for their win and we thank these three sponsors for this
prize package.
The
10th Annual Frazee Award for dedication, sportsmanship and
commitment to the Series was won by Rob Coolahan and Graeme Tubbs and we
congratulate them and all our winners for the 2007 season.
Tournament Director Pete Thompson thanked all the series sponsors who help
keep this Series going and for their continued support and encouragement.
“I would also like to thank the Series staff who help throughout the year
and give of their time to make these events run smoothly. A big thank you
to Rick Somerville, my wife Margo and son Graeme and also Corey and Julie
Moroughan and David Joron and any others who have helped over the season”.
The
Series committee will be meeting over the next two weeks to choose dates for
2008 and we hope to have them available by Oct. 15th and will
start taking entries for the 2008 season after Nov.15th.
