The first bass tournament of the Quinte Fishing Series 2003 season got underway from the George St. ramps in Belleville at 7:00 am with 56 teams heading out into the water. Weather conditions were very favourable in the morning but as the day wore on it changed considerably with rain, thunder and lightning and then strong winds. A number of teams made the trek to Lake Ontario and although the waves were large the toughest part of the return trip were the over 8 foot waves coming across Big Bay.

When all teams had weighed-in, the first place cheque for $2,350.00 went to Napanee’s Grant Elliott and Karl Neumayer with a weight of 18.77 lbs. They also received for their win two waterproof coats compliments of Marks Work Wearhouse, a $50.00 gift certificate from Kelsey’s/Montanna’s-Belleville and two Quinte Fishing Series 2003 Tournament Champion hats. These two anglers also picked up the H2Optix Big Fish Award for their 4.67 lb. smallmouth, big fish of the day, and received $1,100.00 plus two pairs of quality H2Optix sunglasses and Big Fish trophy.

In second place with a weight of 18.44 lbs. were Dean Thompson of Deseronto and Newburgh’s Mike Burriss. These anglers took home $1,600.00 for their day on the water and for third place the Papiest brothers, Tom and Ralph, with a weight of 17.45 lbs., earned $1,000.00

2002 Team of the Year, Brian Hadley and Terry Langstaff claimed the fourth spot and $750.00 with a 16.22 lb. weight, fifth place went to Foxboro’s father/son team of Wilf and Jason Brasser with 16.17 lbs. and with 15.41 lbs., Jeff and Mike MacDonald took sixth place. Rounding out the teams in the money were another father/son team in seventh place, Trevor and Tom Davies with 15.40 lbs. and in eighth were Marc Tephenhart and Justin Willsher weighing-in 15.33 lbs.

With the H2Optix Big Fish Award and paybacks to the top 8 teams, over $8,000.00 in cash was handed out by Tournament Director, Pete Thompson at the prize presentations.

Anglers who fish at least five (5) of the tournaments have the opportunity by totaling their placings, of earning Quinte Fishing Series "Angler/Team of the Year" honours.
