Record Field in 2007 Quinte Fishing Series Bass Opener

The first two day tournament of the Quinte Fishing Series 2007 season and second tournament of the year saw a record 72 teams participate on the opening weekend of the bass season.  The two day event, out of George Street in Belleville, got underway on Saturday morning with two flights of 36 boats leaving at 7:00 and 7:20 a.m. fishing for a five (5) fish limit of largemouth bass for this event with over $13,000.00 in money to be won.

After day one, The husband and wife team of Mike and Mary Nabulsi were on top the leader board with a good weight of 19.15 lbs. and in this bag was “big fish” of the day at 5.45 lbs.  In second place going into day two were Bowmanville’s Jon Manners and partner Mike Peacock from Brooklin with 18.90 lbs. and rounding out the top three after day one were Bob Mackie from Stirling and Madoc’s Roy Newlands with 18.70 lbs.  With the top ten teams only separate by just over 2.00 lbs., any number of teams could move up and take the title on day two!

Day two saw calm waters and very light rain at the 7:00 a.m. blast off time but it cleared up and with light wind, anglers found the fishing very good with a number of teams catching over 40 fish over the course of the day.  The weights at the 3:00 p.m. weigh in were very close with a number of teams taking their turn at the top of the leader board but when all teams had weighed in, the Nabulsi’s, with a weight of 17.85 lbs. and a total weight of 37.00 lbs. stayed on top to take the win.  For the win, Mike and Mary received $4,200.00 as well as two embroidered fleece coats compliments of Mark’s Work Warehouse, a $50.00 gift certificate from Kelsey’s/Montana’s-Belleville and 2007 Tournament Champion hats.  For their “Big Fish” from Saturday, they also received an additional $1,440.00 in cash, Big Fish plaque and sunglasses compliments of H2Optixs by Bolle’.

With a weight of 16.80 lbs. on day two, Jon Manners and Mike Peacock held on to the second place spot with a total weight of 35.70 lbs.  and these anglers received $3,600.00 for their weekend of angling.  With the largest weight of day two at 18.90 lbs., Belleville’s Murray Brydson and Murray Henderson of Peterborough, moved from 12th place on day one to take the third place money of $1,800.00 for their total weight of 35.65 lbs.  The Asselstine’s, Andy and Darcy, the winners of the walleye tournament in May, finished in fourth place with a total weight of 35.10 lbs. earning $1,100.00 and with that a great start on the “Angler/Team of the Year” race with a two tournament total of just five (5) points!  A weight of 34.80 lbs. gave Stirling’s Art MacConnell and Blair Smith $800.00 for fifth place, $580.00 for sixth place went to Bob Mackie and Roy Newlands with 34.70 lbs. and seventh spot went to last years”Angler of the Year”, Bill Tripp and partner Frank Mondeville who received $440.00 for their weight of 33.85 lbs.

Whitby’s Paul Rich and John Daciuk took eight place with 33.25 lbs. and Napanee’s Trevor Davies and son Tom took ninth place with 33.10 lbs and they received $340.00 and $220.00 respectively.  The Lawrence brothers, Tom and Steve, took the tenth and final prize and received two spools of Power Pro fishing line, hats and two $25.00 gift certificates for Carra Outdoor Sports compliments of the Belleville and District Fish and Game Club.

The H2Optix/Bass Magnet Lures “Big Fish” winner for Sunday were Blake Rankie and Gerard Ling with another good fish of 5.45 lbs. and they, like the Nabulsi’s, received $1,440.00 in cash, big fish plaque and also received $100.00 in custom plastic baits compliments of Bass Magnet Lures.  These anglers, also were the top placed team in the 115 H.P. and under division sponsored by Belleville Sport and Lawn, so they also received an additional $220.00 for their effort.

The Mortgage Intelligence draw prize of a $300.00 prepaid Canadian Tire gas card went to team 16 - Belleville’s Larry Courtice and Ryan Somerville and we thank Peter House of the “House Team” at Mortgage Intelligence for this draw prize at each of our six tournaments in 2007.

“It was great to see almost a full field of 75 boats for this tournament, stated tournament director Pete Thompson, and we are excited about the 2007 season.  It was great to see a large number of first time anglers fishing the Series, some whom I haven’t seen since my old Pro Bass days, and we hope they will decide to join us again”.  “As some anglers stated, the Bay of Quinte is one of the best fishing venues in the province at this time and I, like them, think it will only get better!”.

Anglers are reminded that the next tournament of the year will be on July 29th in Belleville and entries must be postmarked at least one week prior to the event.  Numbers for this next tournament are already in the 40's so get your entries in soon to hold your spot.  Further info can be obtained from Pete Thompson at 613-967-1024 evenings or check out www.quintefishing.com for results and info.
