Editor’s Note- Rocky Crawford is Canadas undisputed champion of tournament bass fishing. In 1990 Rocky was the "Bass N Tario" classic champion, which is impressive. But consider that Rocky is also 3 time Chevy/Mariner Bass Tour "Angler of the Year" winner and 3 time Chevy/Mariner Bass Tour "Classic Champ".

Last summer(98) the Chevy/Mariner Tour hosted one of their events on the Bay of Quinte and Rocky was there. Rocky’s goal for this tournament was to protect his point standing in the race for "Angler of the Year"which didn’t mean winning but just placing well. When I met up with Rocky I wanted him to share any insights on the Quinte bass fishery and that’s just what he did.

He spent five days pre-fishing on Quinte preparing for the Chevy/Mariner Bass Tour Belleville Tournament. The first thing he had to say is "I’m really excited to go back to Belleville in the next four to five years from now". The reason he says this is during pre-fishing he caught a ton of 1and 2LB. bass which tells him over the last few years things have been really happening with the bass fishery.

What he found with the bass fishery is that the concentrations of bigger fish are hard to find, these fish are spread out. Rocky explains "I was able to catch heavier fish, a couple at 5lbs. and several at 3lbs. with the best fish coming out of the Napanee River. The bigger fish on Quinte came out of water as shallow as 18" inches. Things to look for in shallow water are some type of structure such as pads and undercut banks".

"The Bay of Quinte has a great fishery developing right now and if you are looking for numbers of fish as opposed to quality of fish look to the deepweed lines. When considering this type of cover the most successful method for me was dunking baits such as plastic worms, craws and the jig n’ pig. Not all weedlines hold fish and a hint here or key, to identifying productive weeds, are those adjacent to spawning grounds".

"Again I want to say I’m really excited about the bass fishery developing on Quinte and can’t wait till the Chevy/Mariner Bass Tour comes again"!
